THE WANNEYSClimbing Club

About us

A club for people who want someone to climb with

Small, friendly and run by climbers. No grades to prove, no interview at the door.

What we do

Our year has a rhythm. When the nights draw in, we climb at the indoor walls, head to huts in the mountains, and those who fancy it go after Scottish winter routes.

When the light comes back, we move outside: summer evenings on the Northumberland sandstone, weekends at crags across the North, and bigger meets when enough of us can get the time off. We've travelled further too, from the Setesdal valley in southern Norway to wherever the next trip takes us.

Who we're for

Anyone who climbs, or wants to. Some of us have been leading trad for decades; some of us mostly boulder at the wall. Plenty of us took a few years off and came back.

We're a club, not a climbing school. We share what we know and there's always someone happy to show you the ropes, but if you're starting from scratch, a course at a local wall is a good way in alongside us.

How we work

We're affiliated to the British Mountaineering Council. You join us once a year, and your membership includes BMC membership, which comes with third-party liability insurance and the BMC's member benefits.

Plans happen in our WhatsApp group: someone posts where they're heading, others pile in, and lifts get sorted. There's no fixed club night right now, so the group is where it all happens.

Where we fit

The North East has a few climbing clubs, and plenty of us belong to more than one. If you want a smaller, sociable club where people know your name and nobody cares what grade you climb, you've found it.
